Microsoft Security Essentials BETA

Microsoft has chosen to make a public beta version of the next Microsoft Security Essentials.
The Beta is downloadable from Microsoft Connect and exists in both a x86 and x64 version.

New Features

  • Windows® Firewall integration: Microsoft Security Essentials setup allows you to turn on Windows Firewall.
  • Enhanced protection from web-based threats: Microsoft Security Essentials has enhanced integration with Internet Explorer® which helps prevent malicious scripts from running and provides improved protection against web based attacks.
  • New and improved protection engine: The updated engine offers enhanced detection and cleanup capabilities and better performance.

System Requirements
The System requirements are currently unchanged.

  • Operating System: Genuine Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3); Windows Vista (Gold, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2); Windows 7
  • For Windows XP, a PC with a CPU clock speed of 500 MHz or higher, and 256 MB RAM or higher.
  • For Windows Vista and Windows 7, a PC with a CPU clock speed of 1.0 GHz or higher, and 1 GB RAM or higher.
  • VGA display of 800 × 600 or higher
  • 140 MB of available hard disk space.
  • An Internet connection is required for installation and to download the latest virus and spyware definitions for Microsoft Security Essentials.
  • Internet Browser:
    • Windows Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.
    • Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or later.

Using different credentials for Team Foundation Server

I have been running with a TFS 2010 server for quite some time now, running on a domain to host all my software projects.

However, the problem is that one of my workstations is not hooked up to the Windows domain of several reasons. Since my login on my workstation is not the same as the one on my AD; Visual Studio 2010 keeps promting me for the correct login.

This has really been a pain, since I use VS pretty often! However, thanks to Windows 7′s ‘User Credentials’ option, the problem is no longer!

Windows 7 has an even better ‘Credentials Manager’ then the one implemented into previous versions of Windows (XP through Vista) and now the Credentials Manager has options for saving credentials used to login to other Windows machines; theese are the ones Visual Studio uses for logging into Team foundation servers!

So; how to add your credentials?

well, jump into Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Credential Manager, and simply press the ‘Add a Windows Credential’ link!, this promts you for the username, password and IP/Hostname for the server, the credentials are valid for.

simply put in the address of the TFS server along with the appropriate user/password combination and voila!

The credentials can be used by any piece of Microsoft software connecting to that server, along with Remote Desktop.

Outlook 2010 – Startup error! (fix!)

I naturally uninstalled the office 2010 beta (x64) build today, along with all other software components for this release and installed the x86 version, so i’m finally able to do syncronization with my Windows Mobile powered cellphone, however starting Outlook 2010 had its ‘problems’.
When starting it up:

“Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. An unexpected error has occoured. MAPI was unable to load the information service msncon.dll. Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured.”

I found out, this problem was caused by the Outlook Hotmail Connector.
I had this component installed in the beta (x64) however I had to uninstall it for the office 2010 (x86) installer to function.
Since the outlook hotmail connector assigns the hotmail accounts to a MAPI driver/handler and I had uninstalled this, outlook could’nt load the driver and thus got an error.

Simple workaround: either remove your hotmail account or install the x86 version of the Hotmail Connector!

Office 2010 Released!

Today Microsoft has officially released the RTM version of office 2010 to MSDN and technet subscribers along with partners have Software Assurance!
The release comes in 6 different bits, going from a tiny “starter” edition, to the professional plus version.

The xbox 360 and H.264 (+ MKV)

With the ‘new’ Microsoft Media Foundation build into Windows 7, the Xbox now has support for playing media files, wrapped into any container as long as having the needed codecs, written especially for use with this new framework.

The newer versions of the Haali Media splitter,adds MKV support for Windows 7, using this particular framework. This enables both Media Center and any Media Center Extender which supports the use of MMF, to play video and audio contained in the Matroska container.

One of the leading manufacturers of H.264 codecs, DivX, has released a pre-release version with support for MMF1, enabling owners of the Xbox 360 to play MKV wrapper H.264 files on their xbox with it configured as a Media Center extender.

Limited bandwidth

Unfortunately decompressed high level H.264 requires a lot of bandwidth, which removes support for any stream requiring more than the 100mbit, the Xbox 360 has as Ethernet interface (10/100).

Which levels to use?

This depends on what it is you need to stream. If the MKV contains a 1080p video stream along with a 5.1 surround audio stream you need to find the correct balance between video and audio quality. If the video stream is 1080p like a Blu-ray, the source is probably around 23.976 FPS2 and an encoding level of 4.0 should be sufficient. Depending on the encoding properties, this leaves the video stream to use between 20 and 80mbit, leaving a minimum of 20mbit for audio + overhead.

For 720p, the encoding level can be set as low as 3.1, resulting in a video stream between 14mbit and 42mbit, leaving plenty of bandwidth for the audio and any overhead.

advarsel: Erhvervsoplysningen (sorry but in Danish!)

erhvervsoplysningen, magen til annoncehajer skal man sgu lede længe efter.
Jeg har dags dato, modtaget et telefonopkald fra denne “virksomhed”, grundet min registrering i CVR registret. Som i så mange forumposts på nettet (eks hele forumafdelingen på unfairpris.dk!), fortæller de ikke hvor fra de ringer, men blot fra ‘erhvervs registreringen’ og prøver at indgå en aftale om optagelse i et register, som i følge deres konsulenter er en “hel almindelig del af erhvervsregistreringen”.

Det er selvfølgelig snyd og humbuk det hele! Det har INTET med en almindelig erhvervsregistrering at gøre, men er blot en måde de prøver at tjene penge.
Endvidere forsøger de at indgå en juridisk bindende mundtlig aftale, således at man har sagt ja til at indbetale lige under 2000,- om året, inden man har noget på skrift fra dette ‘firma’.

Gudskelov er hjælpen nær!
En mundtlig aftale er aldrig bindende, såfremt der ingen vidner er til aftalen.
Dette er firmaet godt klar over og straks ringer en fra deres “kontrolafdeling” for at verificere at der er indgået en aftale.

Sig ALDRIG ja til dette, har man først HER sagt god for aftalen, er den bindende!

Erhvervsoplysningen har åbenbart eksisteret i flere år og i flere omgange. tilbage i 2003 har de været lukket ned og startet op igen.
Endvidere har det ikke været muligt for mig at finde dem i CVR registret – spøjs virksomhed!

Windows Server 2008 R2
